Temple of Hatshepsut Discovered

Previous

A recent archaeological survey by a Polish team at Gebelein, has revealed a temple, cut into the rock and consisting of two rooms, built during the reign of the 18th Dynasty King Hatshepsut. Although the temple was already known, it was never thoroughly examined before, probably due to its very bad state of preservation.

The temple was dedicated to the goddess Hathor, the chief deity at Gebelein, and probably also to Amun-Ra. It suffered several waves of deliberate attack, the first defacing the names and images of Hatshepsut and the second destroying the names and images of the second god, assumed to be Amun-Ra, during the reign of Akhenaton.
