In 1921 an archaeological expedition in Egypt discovers the mummy of ancient Egyptian prince Im-Ho-Tep, who was condemned and buried alive for his crimes against the gods. Also found in the tomb is the Scroll of Thoth, which can bring the dead back to life. When a young member of the expedition reads the Scroll out loud, Im-Ho-Tep comes back to life. Ten years later, disguised as a modern Egyptian, the mummy attempts to reunite with his lost love, an ancient princess whom he believes has been reincarnated into a beautiful young woman.

Looking to restore his body and powers, Imhotep goes looking for the five (!) canopic jars. With time running out, the unlikely team must find the right spell to send Imhotep back to the world of the dead.
Although based on the same story, this movie is not a re-make of the 1932 classic with Boris Karloff. It combines great special effects with a nice balance of action and humour.
Was followed by "The Mummy Returns" in 2001.
