- Cenotaph -
A mortuary complex built to resemble a tomb, but containing no human remains. Cenotaphs were purely ritualistic and ceremonial in nature, but the exact reasons why a second tomb was constructed are not known.
Although cenotaphs were intended never to contain human remains, it often occurred that they were used by later generations for intrusive burials. It also occurred that the real tomb of a person was emptied by tomb robbers, which often makes it difficult to distinguish between cenotaphs and real tombs.
